So here's the deal on the Renown.I gigged with one in the 80's, playing a Les Paul through channel-1, and and Emmons S12U through Channel-2.
So for Steel, use Channel-2, because it has the Mid/Shift knobs.
If you don't have the Channel-Select Footswitch, just turn all the knobs on Channel-1 to 0.
So starting with the knobs under the words Normal Gain:
Pre: Pull the knob outward (it sounds better). Keep that knob very low, like 1, until you are ready to play louder.
Post: Set that at like 5 for now.
Those are living room settings for volume. At gigs I ran the Pre around 3-5 and I always kept the Post at 10, and control overall volume with the volume pedal control.
Low: Set it at +9 (plenty of Bass).
Paramid: Set it at -3. (this cuts the level of Midrange a little).
Shift: Set it to 800, and then see how it sounds as you turn it down towards 300. (find a tone you like).
High: Set it to taste around +3 to +6.

They also have a Renown 400 which I also have used. It is similar but the knobs are a little different.

Hope this helps.
